Duluth’s Great Lakes Aquarium features gigantic sturgeon and tiny crawfish among some 70 other species, and the Great Lakes Floating Maritime Museum showcases both the William A. Irvin, once the proud flagship of U.S. Steel’s fleet, and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Sundew, launched in 1944 to serve as an icebreaker and rescue vessel on the often treacherous Great Lakes. Other area magnets include the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, Lake Superior Zoo, and Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, among the world’s largest repositories for important original documents and manuscripts. Downtown has more than 50 restaurants from casual to gourmet.
